Classroom Acoustics: How Much Acoustic Panel Does a School Classroom Need?

Children need a better signal-to-noise ratio than adults to understand speech. Here is how to treat a classroom properly - and how to do it on a school budget.

Why classrooms fail acoustically

A typical classroom is a hard box: plaster walls, a tiled or vinyl floor, a glazed wall, and 25 to 30 students in constant motion. Add hard desks and a hard ceiling and the reverberation time lands between 0.9 and 1.5 seconds. Speech from the front of the room arrives at the back partly direct and partly as a smear of reflections, and students with any hearing difficulty lose the thread completely. ANSI/ASA S12.60 recommends a reverberation time of 0.6 seconds or less and a background noise level of 35 dBA or below in core learning spaces.

How much panel area do you need?

As a fast planning guide, aim for absorption equal to roughly 15 to 25 percent of the room's total surface area (walls plus ceiling plus floor), distributed rather than concentrated:

Where the panels should go

  1. The back wall first. It is the reflection most likely to bounce straight back to the teacher and the front rows.
  2. Then the upper part of the side walls - above 1.8m, where students cannot lean on or damage them.
  3. Ceiling rafts over the teaching zone if the ceiling void allows suspension. This also cleans up the teacher's own voice.
  4. Leave the front wall mostly bare. Covering it makes the teacher's own voice sound dead to the teacher, who then speaks louder.

Which product for a school

Fire and safety comes first

Schools are occupied buildings with evacuation routes. Make sure the panel carries a Class A rating per ASTM E84 or GB 8624 B1 depending on the market - see what Class A means and B1 vs B2. Fix ceiling panels mechanically as well as with adhesive, never adhesive alone.

Budget reality

At factory pricing, a 30 m² classroom typically needs a low four-figure investment in panels to move from an unusable acoustic environment to a compliant one, and the payer is usually the school district or a renovation budget rather than the acoustics budget. Our cost per square meter guide breaks the numbers down by panel type.
