9mm vs 12mm PET Felt: Thickness, Cost, and Performance

9mm PET felt is the industry default; 12mm adds rigidity and a touch more absorption. Here is when to upgrade.

Why 9mm Is Standard

Most PET acoustic panels use 9mm felt because it balances weight, cost, and NRC (around 0.8). It is rigid enough to mount flat and light enough for ceilings.

What 12mm Adds

At 12mm the panel gains stiffness and roughly 3-5% more low-frequency absorption. It also feels more substantial and hides minor wall imperfections better.

When to Choose 12mm

When 9mm Is Enough

Wall grids, slat backing, and budget office rolls. Pair thicker felt with an air gap and you close most of the 12mm performance gap for less money.
