Standard formats and why they exist
Acoustic panels are sold in standard sizes because standard sizes cut cleanly from standard boards and pack efficiently into containers. The most common large format is roughly 2400 x 600mm for wall panels and 600 x 600mm or 1200 x 600mm for ceiling tiles. Choosing a standard format is the cheapest decision you will make on a project; choosing a custom one is rarely necessary.
Thickness: the number that matters most
Thickness drives acoustic performance more than any other dimension. For PET felt, 9mm is the industry workhorse and 12mm buys you measurable extra absorption, particularly at lower frequencies. For slat panels, thickness includes both the slat depth and the felt backing. Our comparison of 9mm and 12mm PET felt covers the cost and performance trade-off.
Common specification questions
- Can panels be cut on site? Yes. PET felt cuts with a sharp blade or fine-tooth saw; slat panels need a fine-tooth blade and a straight edge to avoid tear-out.
- Can I get non-standard lengths? Yes, but consider freight. Very long panels increase shipping cost and handling risk - see shipping acoustic panels from China.
- Do panels need an air gap? An air gap behind the panel improves low-frequency absorption. Even 20 to 50mm helps, and it is often free if you are furring out an uneven wall anyway.
- What tolerance should I expect? Agree cutting tolerance in writing, typically a couple of millimetres, and confirm whether it applies before or after finishing.
Matching format to application
Large formats suit open wall runs and ceilings where you want fewer joints. Smaller formats suit modular ceilings, feature patterns, and rooms with many interruptions. Mixed formats are normal: one large plane treated with big panels, one feature wall with slats.
Custom sizing with OEM orders
For volume orders we cut to your specification, including slat spacing, panel length, and edge profile. Minimum quantities apply to custom tooling and finishes, and the economics are explained in how to OEM acoustic panels from a China factory.
