The Short Answer
Choose wood slat acoustic panels when aesthetics and low-frequency control matter (lobbies, homes, studios). Choose polyester fiber panels when you need large-area, low-cost absorption (offices, gyms, schools).
Appearance
Wood slats read as warm and premium; polyester comes in solid colors and prints. For a feature wall, slats are hard to beat. For a ceiling grid, polyester is lighter and easier.
Acoustic Performance
- Wood slat (with felt + air gap): NRC 0.8-0.95, better bass
- Polyester 9mm: NRC 0.75-0.85, even and predictable
Cost
Polyester is roughly 30-50% cheaper per square metre at volume. Slats carry the timber and assembly premium but command higher retail.
Best Use by Space
- Home theater: slats on walls + polyester on ceiling
- Open office: polyester clouds, dense layout
- Retail: slats for brand, polyester for back-of-house
