Three things that decide your landed cost
Importing acoustic panels is not difficult, but three variables catch first-time buyers out: volumetric weight, panel length, and packaging. Panels are light but bulky, so ocean freight is usually charged on volume rather than weight. A 40ft high-cube container holds far more square meters than a 20ft, and the freight cost per square meter drops accordingly.
Lead time, realistically
- Samples: 3 to 7 days to produce, plus courier time.
- Standard production: 15 to 25 days after deposit for a full container, depending on finish and season.
- Custom printing or veneer: add 5 to 10 days for setup and approval.
- Ocean transit: roughly 25 to 40 days from Qingdao to northern Europe or the US West Coast, plus inland delivery.
Plan on 60 to 75 days door-to-door for a first container. That sounds long, but most of it is predictable, and a supplier who promises 30 days is usually promising someone else's stock. For the commercial side - MOQ, payment terms, OEM branding - see how to OEM acoustic panels from a China factory.
Packaging that survives the voyage
Acoustic felt and wood slat panels are vulnerable to two things: corner crushing and moisture. We pack in cartons with corner protection, stretch wrap, and palletised stacking, with desiccant for long voyages. Ask any supplier for packing photos before shipment, and insist on a loading photo of the sealed container. If a supplier cannot show you how the goods were loaded, you have no claim when damage appears.
Overlength panels: the hidden constraint
This is the single most common surprise for buyers of wood slat panels. Panels longer than roughly 2.4 meters may not fit standard containers efficiently, and some sizes require special handling or incur surcharges. If your design uses 2.7m or 3m panels, discuss it before you order, not after. We can often re-engineer the format to keep standard-length shipping without changing the visual result.
Duties and documentation
Classification codes differ by product composition, and rates differ by destination. A PET felt panel and an MDF slat panel are not necessarily classified the same way. We supply commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, and fire test documentation; your broker confirms the code. Budget for duty as a percentage of the declared value, and never ask a supplier to under-declare - the risk lands on you, not them.
