Ceiling vs wall: what changes
Most acoustic panels are designed for walls, but ceilings often deliver more benefit because they treat the largest uninterrupted reflective surface in a room. The difference is fixing method and safety factor. A ceiling installation must be mechanically secure, not just adhered, and the substrate above must be able to carry the load.
Check the structure first
Before anything else, establish what you are fixing into: concrete slab, timber joists, steel purlins, or an existing suspended grid. Your fixing choice follows from that, not from the panel. If you are unsure, a single pilot hole tells you more than a spec sheet.
Two installation routes
Direct fix to a solid ceiling
- Mark a layout grid with a chalk line, not by eye - errors compound across a ceiling.
- Fix battens or a furring channel where the substrate is uneven.
- Use mechanical fixings through the panel into the batten, combined with construction adhesive for vibration resistance.
- Keep a consistent gap pattern; acoustic performance improves when panels are not butted tight in a flat plane.
Into a suspended grid
For a T-bar grid, use panels sized to the grid module and confirm the grid can take the additional weight. Heavier decorative slat panels may require independent suspension wires rather than resting in the grid. This is the point at which a five-minute conversation with the grid manufacturer saves a ceiling.
Services and access
Ceilings hide things: sprinklers, detectors, cable trays, access hatches. Plan the panel layout around them before you start cutting, and keep removable access where maintenance is required. Cutting panels to fit around sprinkler heads is normal; blocking them is not.
Which panel to use overhead
Lighter panels are easier and safer overhead. A 9mm PET felt panel is straightforward; a heavy wood slat panel needs more fixings and two people. For slat systems, our wall installation guide covers the cutting and alignment principles that transfer directly to ceilings.
