Adhesive or Screws? How to Fix Acoustic Panels to Walls and Ceilings

The wrong fixing is why panels fall off ceilings. Here is which system to use on drywall, concrete, brick and suspended grids.

Decide two things before you buy anything

The substrate and whether the panel must ever come off again. Panels that hide wiring, speakers or access doors should be removable; panels on a flat painted wall usually should not be. That single question eliminates most of the options below.

Construction adhesive - direct bond

The fastest and cleanest method on flat, sound, clean substrates: plaster, plasterboard, concrete and cement render.

Screws and washers

The default where the panel can be fixed into studs or battens. For wood slat panels, pre-drill to avoid splitting the slat, and recess the head into a colour-matched washer so the fixing disappears. A practical minimum is four fixings per panel plus one every 300mm along the perimeter; double the count on ceilings.

Clips and rails - the removable option

Z-clips, French cleats and magnetic rails let a panel be lifted off and refitted without damage. They cost more than adhesive and take longer to install, but on a commercial fit-out with services behind the wall they pay for themselves the first time someone needs access.

Ceilings: never adhesive-only

Adhesive-only ceilings are a known failure mode, particularly in buildings with vibration or temperature swings, and they are also a fire risk if the panel releases. Use a timber or metal batten grid, a suspended T-grid, or direct mechanical fixing into the structure. Check the panel weight per square meter and confirm the structure's capacity from a professional.

Failure modes we see repeatedly

Installation sequence that works

  1. Mark a level datum line and check the wall for bow with a straight edge.
  2. Set out the panel layout from the centre of the most visible wall.
  3. Install battens or rails first if the wall is not flat.
  4. Fix panels, working away from the datum so the last cut lands in a corner.
  5. Cut around sockets and fittings, then re-fit the faceplate over the panel.
  6. Only then clean the surface - see how to clean wood slat panels.
